In the intervening period between the 35th and 54th minutes, “Hills” lost four of their players to the “bin”; and this combined with the injury loss of abrasive flanker, Jeff Wright, left them with “Mission Impossible”. Playing with a full complement would clearly have made for a much more competitive fixture as, on the evidence of the initial exchanges, “Hills” were continuing their recent goodish form, but it was not to be. The topography of Hartree Mill is such that good use must always be made of the prevailing conditions, normally a stiff wind blowing down the ground. The “Hills” had first use of the elements, but, in hindsight, yellow cards apart, the seeds of the match result were sown by a failure to play the game in Biggar’s danger zone. Far too much energy and effort was spent in engaging the physical Biggar back row and too little time in putting the ball downfield, where the “Hills” line out, the most proficient part of their game, would have profited. As it was, the break was reached with “Hills” ahead by only two points, from a Ross Curle penalty and a Stuart Rose try, with Biggar goaling two penalties in reply. The third quarter of the game found the “Hills” in total disarray, having to play for a total of 17 of those minutes with only 13 men on the field. In this period, Biggar, rightly, showed little mercy and monopolised ball and field possession to take the game well out of reach of their visitors. When finally restored to fifteen players, but having to accommodate three scrum halves in the team, “Hills” began to show what they might have achieved if parity in numbers had been permissible. There were many passages of pleasing continuity play, but it took some time to wear down the home defence, which, ironically, suffered their sole yellow card in the 81st minute of play. David Frame finally breached the Biggar line for Ross Curle to add the goal points “We shall have to put this game and its baggage right out of our minds. Next Saturday, we begin the second round of league matches, and our focus has to provide a mentality of treating those 11 games, all as cup ties. We shall be ready for GHA,” noted head Coach, Aaron Collins. “Hills” 1st XV –David Frame, Cammy McCulloch, Andrew Eggleton, Will Marshall ( Andrew Cameron ), Ross Curle, Sam Muir ( Jamie Hunter ), Jamie Hunter ( Sam Muir ), Willie Brown ( Joe Stafford ) , Stuart Ross ( Stewart McMillan), Joe Stafford ( Bobby Agnew ), Chris Tulloch ( Marty Lane ), David Fisken , Jeff Wright ( Stuart Ross ), Stuart Rose , Cameron Kerr ( C ) Subs – All used |
