| “ DUMBED DOWN AT DUMBRECK” CARTHA QP 18pts HILLHEAD JORDANHILL 6 pts In a game where individual flair was mitigated due to a heavy surface, Cartha QP triumphed deservedly over a spirited, but eventually well beaten “Hills” side by three tries and one penalty goal to two penalty goals. The “Hills” early promise with good territorial possession proved to be an unreliable indicator, as presence in the Cartha danger areas did not produce any tries, despite good thrusts from Eggleton and Wright. Indeed, all “Hills” had to show from their opening endeavours was a successful penalty goal from full back, Martin Yorston, which the hosts quickly countered through stand-off Jackson. The key moment from the first half, however, was a blind side thrust from Cartha’s scrum half, the combative McCrossan, which Robertson carried on to score. Yet a half time deficit of five points should not have been insurmountable for the “Hills”, but early pressure from the home pack, in one of their trademark rolling mauls, produced a try from Chaney in the left hand corner, which was unconverted. Even at 13- 3 down, the “Hills” were not too far out of it not to stage a second half comeback, but what continuity rugby was played belonged to the inventive Cartha midfield where Gibbon and Moffat combined well to always ask questions of the “Hills” defence. This, however, stayed resolute, although severely stretched at times. “Hills” did come back into it, but their tactics of constantly seeking the inside runner while ignoring any width to their play did not produce any concerted pressure. Martin Yorston did add to the “Hills” points with a penalty to bring it closer at 13 pts to 6, but the wish to try for the goal points and thereby the single bonus betrayed “Hills” lack of confidence in narrowing the points differential further by seeking a lineout close to the home line. It was no surprise, then, when Cartha after a spell of pressure in the “Hills” five metre area added to their score with another unconverted try from Robertson. At 18pts to 6 the game was all but over, apart from a brief flurry which produced little of any note to threaten the Cartha line. “Hills” 1st XV Martin Yorston , Will Marshall ( David Frame ),Andrew Eggleton, David Paterson ( Will Marshall ), David Mitchell, Jamie Hunter, Sam Muir, Willie Brown ( Nick McAulay ), Ewen Weir, Nick McAuley ( Bobby Agnew ), David Fisken, Marty Lane, Jeff Wright, Cameron Kerr ( C ), Joe Stafford (Murray Allan ) Subs – Douglas Elder |
