“ HILLS SUNK AT RIVERSIDE”

Jed-Forest 10pts Hillhead Jordanhill  0pts

This was a game into which the “Hills” squad put everything, but returned home up the
A68 with neither league points nor scoreboard points.  The records will show correctly that
“Jed” defeated their visitors by one goal and one penalty goal to nothing but the “Hills”
players, coaches and officials knew that this was “one which got away”.

From the opening moments when the “Hills” took the game to the their hosts right until the
final whistle, there were numerous chances which went a-begging.  Match notes record a
searing break from the returning Andrew Eggleton at outside centre which broke down in
the “Jed” twenty two from lack of effective support; also two fine breaks up the middle of
the field from the improving Joe Stafford ran out of momentum due to a lack of effective
finishing; and right at the end of this end to end match, there was a knock on and a
forward pass with the Jed line at the “Hills” mercy.  If  there was a difference between the
sides, “Jed” looked more assured passers of the ball , frequently being able to transfer at
high speed; and were that bit better at switching the pojnt of attack.  The game’s only try
owed everything to Jed’s taking advantage of two “Hills” mistakes to drive to the right hand
corner, forming a ruck and thereafter fast hands finding Hogg running at speed to finish on
the opposite side of the field.  McGarva was successful with the conversion as he was with
a penalty 16 minutes later to take Jed 10 points ahead.  That was in the 26th minute, and
thereafter the game remained scoreless, but not without end to end incident and
endeavour.

Understandably, “Hills” were too anxious at times, and this showed in the last five minutes
of the game when pressing for their all important score.  More poise and composure in
finishing is certainly needed if pressure is to be converted into points to bring the elusive
wins which “Hills” will require to begin their move away from the foot of the Premier 2
league table.
