| “SOUTERS TRIUMPH “ SELKIRK 14pts HILLHEAD JORDANHILL 8pts In a game full of running, but marked by poor finishing by both sides, “Hills” after a very bright start against Selkirk lost by one try and three penalty goals to one try and one penalty goal. “Hills” enjoyed the better of the conditions, playing with the low sun and wind at their backs in the first half, and monopolised most of the early possession with open side flanker, Jeff Wright, being particularly prominent. A training ground move worked to perfection for their first try, with a neat pick up from Cammy Kerr, again an outstanding captain, with a quick transfer to scrum half, Sammy Muir, who then offloaded to full back, David Frame, who broke the gain line at pace to touch down unopposed. The try was unconverted, but the “Hills” were off and running against, at times, a very unconvincing Selkirk fringe defence. Yet, poor discipline at the breakdown allowed Selkirk back into the game with their centre Cassidy being allowed three kicks at goal, two of which he converted to take them 6 pts to 5 ahead, but towards the end of the first half, with prop Dougie Walker in the “sin bin”, Martin Yorston restored his side’s lead with a penalty from in front of the Selkirk posts. Any thoughts “Hills” had of second consecutive away victory in the Borders soon evaporated, however, in the face of a fierce Selkirk second half onslaught. It was not that “Hills” played particularly badly, rather it was the intensity of the Selkirk play which forced them on the defensive. Excellent defence, however, in their own five metre area allowed “Hills” to hold Selkirk up on at least three occasions, but there was no stopping Alistair Dickson whose momentum and bulk carried him over the line. Fortunately for “Hills” Cassidy’s conversion was missed, thereby allowing them a losing bonus point at the end of the contest. But there was still an opportunity for the visitors to draw level when Jeff Wright led a tremendous charge upfield from his own pick and drive. Passes were interchanged with Andy Eggleton, Stuart Ross, now playing on the wing, and David Frame with Selkirk eventually conceding a penalty some 25 metres out. But “Hills” could make nothing of the chance which came their way, and eventually a kick to touch by the excellent Cassidy allowed Selkirk to close the game out. A deflated “Hills” head coach, Aaron Collins, conceded : “ Selkirk on the basis of their second half display deserved to win, but I have to say we, at times, let ourselves down. We now have seven games left in this league with four of these at home, and we aim to be competitive in all of these.” “Hills” 1st XV –David Frame, Alan Cahoon ( Stuart Ross ), Andy Eggleton, Will Marshall ( Andrew Cameron ), Stuart Todd, Martin Yorston ( Will Marshall ) , Sam Muir, Nick McAuley ( Douglas Walker ), Stuart Ross (Ewen Weir ), Douglas Walker ( Joe Stafford ), Marty Lane, Chris Tulloch ( David Fisken ) , Jeff Wright, Cameron Kerr ( C ), Joe Stafford ( Douglas Elder ) Subs – All used |
