| Hughenden v Mid Argyll 20th January 2007 Hughenden beat Mid Argyll in the Plate 14-0 I would have loved to hear what the Jed coach would have said about the "pitch" the Hughenden played on outside Lochgilphead this Sat. After their refusal to play at Forresters ground, I think they should go sometime and inspect a real rugby field. The ref from Greenock deemed the original pitch unplayable because of the lamp post goals and 4 inches of standing water. The field we played on had proper posts, all be it a set of brown squinty ones and only 3 inches of water with creosote lines on mud. Also there was the added hazard of foot high rushes and the odd cow pat for good measure. My boots filled immediately with water on entry to the field of dreams and then they kicked off only for the ball to land in the biggest pond on the pitch. I dived on the ball like a good forward and was promptly soaked through. Great stuff ! Much huffing and puffing ensued from both sides try to play catch the bar of soap. M Argyll had the better of the first 40 with the sleet and wind at their backs, but the 'Hughs' turned at half time 0-0. As is always the case the wind dropped and so did the temperature but the restart proved good for 'Hughs' as an early infringment led to a penalty kicked to the corner, driven lineout, out the backs and back in to Archie Matheson for a touch down. Con from Stu Torbet 7-0. 25mins of catch the soap bar later a similar lineout drive, maul and out the backs to winger Jamie McAllister, 12-0. Con from Stu T and 14-0 it ended. Many thanks to M Argyll for the effort to get the game on. Their keen endevour should be noted by the more glamourous teams up the leagues. This was real grassroots rugby but sadly no mention of this will be made at HQ SRU |
