| Hills march on as Polish worker steals the show Livingston 7 – 46 Hillhead Jordanhill On Saturday at a windy Almond Park, the “Hills” secured a deserved victory over a stuffy Livingston side. The victory, however, came at a cost with Polish llama breeder and Ivan Drago lookalike Dan Witko suffering a nasty shoulder injury which will keep him on the sidelines for the immediate future. Although at times the “Hills” played some entertaining fast flowing rugby they will be disappointed that they failed to play at a higher tempo for longer periods and in the coming weeks the performance level will need to be improved if the promotion chasing side are to remain in the hunt for the championship. After a scrappy opening period, the “Hills” broke the deadlock with a good passing movement along the backline, Witko providing the finishing touches. Five minutes later in an almost identical movement, Witko strode in for his second of the day. At this point the Hills were guilty of some slack play allowing the Livingston fullback Biff to score a converted try under the posts. This awoke the Hills from their slumber with three more scores added before half-time courtesy of Mahindru, Witko and Cahoon. The second half was a disjointed affair with three more tries added the best of which was Mahindru’s hatrick score in the last play of the game, the architect was Johnny Warchild with a deft David Humphresy’s-esque chip and catch over the onrushing defence. Best for Hills on the day were forward trio Hamish “The Mongrel” Mathieson, Jack “Paddy” McMullan and Calum “Heed” McConachie who worked tirelessly in providing the Hills exciting three quarters with a steady stream of possession. In the backs, Gavin “The Mouth” Mahindru moaned constantly while player/coach Alan “Father Time” Cahoon gave good direction to his youthful colleagues. Off the field Duncan Morris made a promising debut as Team Manager and with Kevin Mason’ s weekly training, a promising future beckons. Special mention must go to the Hills bus- driver/part-time physio who unselfishly ran to the prone Witko’s aid in the second half. Thankfully more medically qualified personnel were nearby. On a disappointing note both hat-trick scorers Witko and Mahindru refused to buy the customary jugs after the game. It is in this writer’s hope that the powers that be will have noted this and suitable retribution will be extracted in the end of season court session. Acting Head Coach Gareth Morris refused to pass comment. |
