18th November - Jimmy Neilson

It was with considerable sadness that the Club learned of the death of Jimmy Neilson last
weekend.  Although Jimmy had not been a regular attender at Hughenden during the last
two seasons for both rugby and cricket, he was, nevertheless, still keenly interested in
everything to do with the Club and its sporting sections.  One or two members, principally,
Donnie McFarlane, kept in touch, and reports of these visits were always full of questions
about “ how are the boys doing ?”

The high water mark of Jimmy’s time at Hughenden was during his stewardship of the post
match raffles with Raymond Benjamin,  when the pair regularly cut a swathe through the
throng, rattling their can.  Their usual Saturday afternoon “take” was £180, currently twice
the 2006 norm.  Jimmy was also a stalwart of the Away Supporters’ Club, being first on the
bus and last off it on its return to the Club.  Many remain thankful for his timely intervention
and arresting of a member’s progress towards the driver on a return trip from the Stewartry
when the excesses of the occasion proved too much.

Sadly, following an accident on his way home one Saturday night after a home game, Jimmy
lost his confidence and independence.  The death of his wife, coupled with Craig’s injury
absences from the 1st XV, conspired to leave Jimmy virtually a recluse.  He shall be missed.

Jimmy’s funeral will be held at Dalnottar Crematorium on Tuesday the 21st November at
10.00.
